The 47th Annual General Convention of the Children of the Confederacy was held July 12-14, 2001, at the Williamsburg Hospitality House in Williamsburg, Virginia. Seven Mississippians attended the Convention, including three CofC members.
Anne Pitre, Margaret Davis Hayes #520, concluded her term as Second Vice President General and was elected Treasurer General for the 2001-2002 term. In the absence of outgoing Division President, Victor Baronich, Anne presented the Division's report on Division Presidents' Evening. She was awarded the Thomas Charles Morgan Award for the most oustanding presentation of a Division Report on Division Presidents' Evening - judged on delivery, content, organization and enthusiasm.
Samantha Cowart, Nathan Bedford Forrest #560, served as an elected member of the General Nominating Committee and assisted at the Memorial Service.
Accompanying the CofC members were Mr. and Mrs. Sam McNeil, Ruth Harrington and Margaret Murdock.
Mrs. Rebecca Fairchild, Division Director, was awarded the Mary Coulter Miller Award which is awarded annually, based on nomination, to the most outstanding Division Director.
The Division brought home several awards:
PAUL LAMAR POWELL BOWL: to the Division submitting the best typed report on Memorial Day programs.
RUTH ELLEN, FLORENCE AND FRANCES JONES AWARD: to the Division with the most outstanding educational and historical achievements.
Mississippi Chapters received awards, as well:
JUDITH ANN JONES AWARD: to the chapter purchasing the greatest number of insignia - Margaret Sarah Ridley Gooch #912.
MRS. CHESTER C. CAMERON AWARD: to the Chapter reporting the most outstanding civic work - Margaret Davis Hayes #520.
The General Executive Committee of the CofC awarded its annual Robert E. Lee Award to Margaret Murdock, CofC Chairman of Judges and Mississippi UDC member. The REL Award recognizes outstanding service, above and beyond the requirements of duties, to the Children of the Confederacy by a UDC member.
The Alabama Division invited the CofC to Huntsville for the 48th Annual General Convention, and the North Carolina Division extended and invitation to the organization to hold its Golden Anniversary Convention in North Carolina.
