Each year, the United Daughters of the Confederacy© sponsors an essay contest. The topics are chosen by the MS Division Historian.

The topic for junior high students (7-9 grade) is "Dixie After the War".

The topic for senior high students (10-12 grade) is "The American Indian as a Participant in the War Between the States."

Rules for submitting essays are simple. They must be at least 400 words, typed, and double spaced. Footnotes citing references must be included. DO NOT refer to the war as the "Civil War" unless citing a direct quote. Instead, use the term "War Between the States."

The student's name, age, name of school, and grade must be on top of the page. A Chapter must sponsor the student; however, the student does not have to be a member of CofC.

Monetary prizes for each topic are $50.00 for 1st place; $25.00 for 2nd place; and $10.00 for 3rd place.

All entries should be mailed to DIVISION HISTORIAN. The deadline to receive essays will be April 10, 2017.

I'm looking forward to reading the essays that are submitted.
